The Head and the Heart

The secular world glorifies the intellect; God looks at the heart.  He doesn’t scorn the intellect, which He created, but He knows its limitations, its pitfalls.  The heart, however, is the true measure of a person—for good or for evil—and has a huge capacity for God’s in-filling, loving Spirit.  Jesus wants our hearts to be like His.   It is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks, and the body works, and fruitful ministries grow.

Being good from the head is not the same as being good from the heart.  While we are still on this side of eternity, it’s a good idea to realize the difference.  A good work, rooted exclusively in the head, always has an angle.  Look closely, lift up a few innocent looking projects inside yourself and see what is hiding there.

Philanthropy and social virtues are not the same as Christian virtues, even though they may appear alike.  Many “good persons” will be surprised when they appear before the Lord and discover that He was unimpressed with their philanthropy.

Head and heart working together is wonderful!  Being stuck in the head alone is a terrible way to live.  God is not impressed with our intellectual skills, nor will He be at the last judgment.  If all our information merely rattles around in our heads, but never reaches the heart or moves us into action, then pride is hiding somewhere within.
